ICON 2026 Enhances Newborn Care Through Neonatal Intubation & Surfactant Administration Workshop

As part of ICON 2026’s pre-conference capacity-building initiatives, the Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN) conducted a focused hands-on workshop on Neonatal Intubation and Surfactant Administration on October 16, 2025. The full-day training brought together neonatal doctors and trainees to strengthen their clinical competencies in early respiratory management for newborns.

The workshop provided participants with essential knowledge to identify newborns requiring endotracheal intubation or surfactant therapy. Early in the session, participants were introduced to the differences between the INSURE, LISA, and MIST techniques, followed by guided demonstrations that highlighted safe and effective approaches to neonatal airway care. The training was facilitated by Dr. Naila Nizami, Dr. Muzaffar Saleem, and Dr. Nasir Zia, whose expertise helped transform complex clinical concepts into clear, practical steps for participants.

Throughout the day, attendees practiced selecting appropriate ETT sizes based on newborn weight and gestational age, calculating accurate surfactant doses, and preparing essential equipment for neonatal airway procedures. Hands-on simulations allowed participants to perform supervised surfactant administration using the INSURE method, along with the required post-procedure monitoring to ensure newborn stability. A dedicated segment on video laryngoscope use further enhanced their visualization skills and procedural confidence.

Participants reported increased competence, improved decision-making, and a stronger sense of readiness to manage neonatal airway emergencies within their facilities. This workshop reflects IHHN’s continued commitment to building a skilled neonatal workforce aligned with the ICON 2026 theme: Resilient Care, Sustainable Futures
