Point of Care Ultrasound: From Basics to Bedside

The Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN) organized a hands-on educational workshop titled “Point of Care Ultrasound: From Basics to Bedside” on December 3, 2025, at the Conference Hall, Multan Institute of Kidney Diseases. The workshop was attended by approximately 30–35 healthcare professionals involved in nephrology and acute care services.

The workshop aimed to equip participants with practical skills to effectively use Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) in bedside clinical decision-making. Participants were trained to perform Venous Excess Ultrasound (VExUS) assessments for interpreting venous congestion patterns, identify key lung ultrasound findings for volume assessment and common pulmonary pathologies, conduct focused bedside cardiac ultrasound, and perform inferior vena cava (IVC) ultrasound to evaluate intravascular volume status. The training also covered arteriovenous fistula (AVF) ultrasound assessments, including patency and flow evaluation, as well as renal ultrasound (USG) techniques. Hands-on, real-time scanning on volunteer participants under expert supervision allowed participants to translate theory into practice.

As a result of the training, participants enhanced their ability to integrate POCUS findings into bedside management, supporting improved clinical decision-making in cases of acute kidney injury (AKI), volume overload, dialysis optimization, and critical nephrology care.

The workshop was facilitated by a distinguished panel of experts, including Dr. Khurram Bashir, Consultant Nephrologist at Indus Hospital & Health Network; Dr. Ali Ashraf, Consultant Nephrologist at MASH Hospital; Dr. Maliha Johar, Assistant Professor of Nephrology at Nishtar Hospital; Dr. Masood, Consultant Cardiologist at MASH Hospital; and Dr. Ponum Khalid, Associate Professor at Medicare Hospital.

This initiative reflects IHHN’s continued commitment to strengthening clinical capacity through hands-on training and advancing quality patient care across its facilities.
