Karachi, January 16, 2026 — Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN) organized a capacity-building workshop titled “Psychological First Aid in Crises” at the Transfusion Hall, Blood Centre, Karachi. The session focused on equipping participants with essential skills to provide immediate psychological support during crisis and trauma situations.
The workshop offered a comprehensive understanding of crisis and trauma, highlighting their psychological and physical impacts on individuals. Participants were introduced to the core principles of Psychological First Aid (PFA), commonly known as the 5Cs: Safety, Calmness, Connectedness, Self-efficacy, and Hope, and explored how these principles can be applied effectively in real-life emergencies.
Through interactive discussions and simulated crisis scenarios, attendees learned practical PFA techniques, including effective listening, empathy, grounding strategies, and calm communication with distressed individuals. The session also emphasized the importance of recognizing situations that require referral to professional mental health services, ensuring appropriate and timely support.
A key component of the workshop addressed self-care and stress management, underscoring the need for caregivers and responders to maintain their own emotional wellbeing while supporting others in high-stress environments.
The session was facilitated by Ms. Mishal Ashraf, Psychologist at NED University, Head of Research at New Horizon Care Centre, Vice Chairperson at Al Shakoor Foundation, and a Capacity Building Specialist. Her expertise provided participants with valuable insights into practical and ethical approaches to psychological first aid. The workshop was moderated by Ms. Ayesha Kasiri, Assistant Manager, Pur Umeed Zindagi Program, Community Health & Behaviour, Indus Hospital & Health Network.
By the end of the workshop, participants reported increased confidence in applying Psychological First Aid techniques, demonstrating empathy, and managing their own wellbeing while supporting individuals affected by crises—reinforcing IHHN’s commitment to holistic and compassionate healthcare.
