Workshop in Rheumatology: Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Karachi, Pakistan – February 07 2026: A full-day workshop on Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound was conducted at the Transfusion Hall, Blood Center, Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN), Karachi. The session brought together clinicians and radiology professionals to enhance their knowledge and hands-on skills in MSK ultrasound within rheumatology practice.

The workshop focused on building a strong foundation in the basic principles of MSK ultrasound, including ultrasound physics, appropriate probe selection, and machine optimization. Participants were guided through the identification of normal musculoskeletal sono-anatomy, enabling accurate recognition of tendons, muscles, joints, bursae, nerves, and bone cortex.

A key highlight of the session was the training in standardized EULAR-recommended scanning techniques, emphasizing correct patient positioning and probe orientation for major joints. Participants also learned to recognize common MSK pathologies such as synovitis, effusion, tenosynovitis, enthesitis, and erosions using B-mode and basic Power Doppler imaging. The workshop further addressed the integration of MSK ultrasound into routine clinical practice, including clinical correlation, understanding the limitations of ultrasound, and avoiding common imaging artifacts.

Through interactive discussions and practical demonstrations, attendees gained confidence and valuable hands-on experience in essential MSK ultrasound skills, strengthening their diagnostic capabilities in rheumatology.

The session was facilitated by an esteemed panel of experts, including Prof. Babur Salim, Consultant Rheumatologist, Fauji Foundation Hospital; Dr. Rizwan Ajmal, Assistant Professor and Consultant Radiologist & Section Head at Liaquat National Hospital; Dr. Muneer Sadiq, Consultant Internal Medicine and Rheumatology, IHHN; and Dr. M. Shoaib Nasir, Diagnostic & Vascular Interventional Radiologist, IHHN.

The workshop reflects IHHN’s ongoing commitment to advancing clinical excellence and strengthening specialized diagnostic services through continuous professional development.
