Helping Baby Breath (HBB)

Description:

Helping Baby Breathe is a simulation-based resuscitation program for low resource settings that teaches the skills of caring for healthy babies and assisting babies that do not breathe on their own after birth. The first minutes after birth are very critical for a neonate and resuscitation measures taken at this point can save lives reducing neonatal mortality.
According to PPHI in rural areas of Sindh, birth asphyxia accounts for 23% of neonatal mortality, which is mainly due to the deliveries conducted by unskilled birth attendants. As the patients rely on these unskilled birth attendants for deliveries, the purpose of such trainings is to develop a skill set that will help reduce neonatal mortality and save life during the “golden minute” after birth, through a focus on bag and mask ventilation.
We are planning to conduct HBB training for doctors and paramedics including midwives, health workers working in the community in January 2024. It will be a one-day training spanning over 8 hours.
There will be two Master trainers and 1 facilitator from Family medicine department who will be conducting the training.

Cardiovascular Risk Stratification Using High Sensitivity Troponin I and Clinical Decision Support System

Description:

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Timely diagnosis is extremely critical in such patients, which helps healthcare professionals decide the treatment pathway, thereby supporting them in their journey at different stages for overall patient satisfaction.
This workshop is designed to elaborate on and discuss with healthcare professionals the efficiency of high-sensitivity troponin I along with other cardiac biomarkers for risk stratification, which could help patients in early-stage detection. In this session, the participants will have a chance to learn about the global perspective through international speakers as well as from Pakistan's few key opinion leaders, who will share their experience in treating such patients supported by real-time examples and case scenarios.
We will also present how patient care can be linked through state-of-the-art informatics using the Clinical Decision Support (CDS) system. CDS utilizes the power of lab data to provide customized, patient-specific information in light of changing clinical guidelines. It supports healthcare professionals in reducing care variability due to many unforeseen events and improving outcomes by optimizing the overall process of treatment.

Hands-on Training on Bronchial Asthma Management in Children

Description:

Childhood asthma is a chronic respiratory condition characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to recurrent episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. It is one of the most common chronic diseases in children and requires comprehensive management for optimal control. The management of childhood asthma involves a comprehensive approach that includes medical interventions, environmental control measures, and patient education. The goal is to achieve and maintain good asthma control, minimize symptoms, prevent exacerbations, and optimize the child's overall lung function and quality of life.
Medical management typically includes the use of asthma medications, such as short-acting beta-agonists (SABAs) for relieving acute symptoms and inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) for long-term control. Other medications, such as leukotriene modifiers, long-acting beta-agonists (LABAs), and oral corticosteroids, may be prescribed based on the severity of symptoms and the child's individual needs. Regular monitoring of lung function through spirometry or peak flow measurements can help assess the child's response to treatment and adjust medication doses accordingly.
Environmental control measures aim to reduce exposure to asthma triggers, such as tobacco smoke, dust mites, pollen, pet dander, and mold. This may involve implementing strategies like using dust mite-proof mattresses and pillow covers, maintaining a clean and allergen-free living environment, and avoiding known triggers whenever possible.
Patient education is crucial to managing childhood asthma. Parents, caregivers, and the child should be educated about asthma triggers, symptoms, and the correct use of medications, including inhaler techniques. They should also be aware of asthma action plans, which outline steps to take during asthma exacerbations or worsening symptoms.
Regular follow-up visits with healthcare professionals are essential for monitoring the child's asthma control, adjusting medication regimens as needed and providing ongoing education and support.
In summary, the management of childhood asthma involves a combination of medical interventions, environmental control measures, and patient education to achieve optimal control of symptoms and minimize the impact of asthma on the child's daily life.
