Hands-on Training on Bronchial Asthma Management in Children

Description:

Childhood asthma is a chronic respiratory condition characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to recurrent episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. It is one of the most common chronic diseases in children and requires comprehensive management for optimal control. The management of childhood asthma involves a comprehensive approach that includes medical interventions, environmental control measures, and patient education. The goal is to achieve and maintain good asthma control, minimize symptoms, prevent exacerbations, and optimize the child's overall lung function and quality of life.
Medical management typically includes the use of asthma medications, such as short-acting beta-agonists (SABAs) for relieving acute symptoms and inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) for long-term control. Other medications, such as leukotriene modifiers, long-acting beta-agonists (LABAs), and oral corticosteroids, may be prescribed based on the severity of symptoms and the child's individual needs. Regular monitoring of lung function through spirometry or peak flow measurements can help assess the child's response to treatment and adjust medication doses accordingly.
Environmental control measures aim to reduce exposure to asthma triggers, such as tobacco smoke, dust mites, pollen, pet dander, and mold. This may involve implementing strategies like using dust mite-proof mattresses and pillow covers, maintaining a clean and allergen-free living environment, and avoiding known triggers whenever possible.
Patient education is crucial to managing childhood asthma. Parents, caregivers, and the child should be educated about asthma triggers, symptoms, and the correct use of medications, including inhaler techniques. They should also be aware of asthma action plans, which outline steps to take during asthma exacerbations or worsening symptoms.
Regular follow-up visits with healthcare professionals are essential for monitoring the child's asthma control, adjusting medication regimens as needed and providing ongoing education and support.
In summary, the management of childhood asthma involves a combination of medical interventions, environmental control measures, and patient education to achieve optimal control of symptoms and minimize the impact of asthma on the child's daily life.

Grant Writing

Description:

The grant writing workshop would be an orientation workshop to give the audience an idea of what a grant is, why it is needed, and what basic steps are involved in writing a grant proposal. It would be more of an overview of the entire process to acquaint the audience with the essentials of this document. It would cover topics such as identification of the funding source and its relevance in our context and our credibility for application, identification of a problem for research and expected outcomes, writing a concept note, identifying research partners, identifying the research site and appropriate participants and timelines, and finally organizing all pertinent concepts to write them down. Each of the components would have distinct sections detailing relevant information, keeping in mind the heterogeneity of the audience to ensure the key message goes across. Practicum: A grouped hands-on exercise for practice.
